What is skin cancer?

There are two main types of skin cancer: melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma).

You should see a specialist if any of your moles have the following symptoms:

  • Recent changes in size, shape or colour.

  • New moles that look different from the others.

  • Largest diameter measures 6mm or more.

  • Changes in sensation (pain, numbness or tingling)

  • Spontaneous bleeding, oozing or crusting.

  • Ulceration

  • Inflammation

There are also many factors which may increase your risk of developing skin cancer:

  • Having fair skin (Fitzpatrick types I or II)

  • Family history of melanoma

  • Having more than 50 moles 

  • Frequent sunburns

  • Having lived in a hot country

  • Sunbed use
